Nowadays, sunglasses are common pieces of fashion accessories that are worn and used by many people basically for fashion reasons. And because of this not everyone truly understands what they are meant for. Many adults wear sunglasses as a fashion statement and perhaps due to that reason, children are often left out from wearing a good pair to protect their eyes.
Just as important for kids
But go beyond (or actually take a step back from) that fashion element. Sunglasses are accessories that are worn over the eyes to protect them from direct sun rays which are also known as ultraviolet rays (UV rays). This means that there are far better reasons for wearing sunglasses, beyond fashion. And eye protection is just as important for kids as it is for adults. You might even argue that it's more important!
But why then do sunglasses for children receive so little attention?
Why do people wear sunglasses
Over the years the reasons why people wear sunglasses have evolved and changed. Some people wear sunglasses to make a fashion statement or to imitate their favorite celebrities (and you must agree that sunglasses are quite fashionable). Others wear them as protective gear. And yet others wear them for health reasons. They are multipurpose at best. Also for children.
Fashionable shades for adults only?
Until several years ago, it seemed like sunglasses were an adult-only thing but right now sunglasses are increasingly (and thankfully) being worn more and more by children. The use of sunglasses should actually be encouraged among children and in this article we will be taking a look at some of the reasons why.
Reason 1:
Protecting from eye conditions and defects:
so, let me ask you: who loves spending afternoons outdoors more than kids? Kids love to play outside (they sometimes need a little bit of help to switch off phones and tablets though). Their infinite creative activities range from tirelessly playing hoops in the garden to dangling from swings at the park. And often this means that they spend many hours right under the blazing sun. And exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation.
Damaging sensitive eyes
When the eyes are continuously exposed to UV rays, it damages the sensitive cells in and around the eyes and it can lead to certain eye conditions/defects. This accumulates over the years. And therefore it is even more important to protect kids' sensitive eyes with a good pair of sunglasses.
Scientifically speaking, continuous exposure of the eyes to what they call "blue light" from the solar spectrum increases the risk of macular degeneration and other eye conditions. There is an almost never ending list of damages and diseases that can be caused by the exposure of the eyes to direct sunlight. These can often be prevented by the use of sunglasses which allow your kids to have fun and stay safe at the same time.
Reason 2:
Protecting against mechanical injuries:
As established earlier, children love to play. And sometimes they can play a little bit too rough, which exposes them to the dangers of (mechanical) injuries to their eyes. Mechanical injuries can be caused by various things, ranging from the impact of a ball to the face to the spread of dust particles to the eyes.
To prevent children from eye injuries, parents can adopt the use of sunglasses for their kids' eyes. Needless to say, while having fun, children do not take care of their eyes themselves. so it's up to the parents to avoid eye injuries. And many of those can easily be eliminated by the use of sunglasses.
Sunglasses for children come in different forms and styles. Just find the most suitable for your child or children, and make sure you put quality into consideration.
Reason 3:
It enhances childrens' vision:
The use of sunglasses can significantly improve a child's vision in the sun. You have probably been in a situation where you had to squint your eyes in the sun to see what you were actually trying to look at (or read something). That difficulty you experience as an adult is actally just as annoying to kids. The use of sunglasses eliminates needless strain to your kid's eyes to see or read anything under the bright lights of the sun. Trust me squinting can be quite uncomfortable, also for children!
Reason 4:
It has an appealing sense of fashion:
contrary to popular opinion, children are actually very much concerned about fashion and they also love to look good. Sunglasses are stylish and fashionable and could be just what your child needs to bring their overall dressing up a notch. Besides, there is no harm in staying safe and looking cool at the same time. Sunglasses come in different shapes, colors, lenses, tints, shades, materials, and frames.
When choosing a pair of sunglasses for children, make sure it is very comfortable and durable. It can be a real challenge to get them to use their sunglasses if they feel uncomfortable. Children are also not nearly as careful as adults which increases the chances of them getting their sunglasses damaged, which is more reason for you to go for quality and durable products. You can also play around with colors while choosing sunglasses for children. It all adds to the fun.
Sunglasses are just as important for kids as they are for adults.
